Go ahead given for Liverpool hospital transformation

Liverpool City Council has given the green light for the £400 million redevelopment of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The new PFI-funded hospital will be split between two sites: The first at Prescot Street / West Derby Street will focus on emergency and specialist healthcare and the second site at the current Broadgreen Hospital will focus on planned care, out-patient services and patient rehabilitation.

Construction will begin in 2010 with completion due in 2015. The existing building, built in the 1970s, will be demolished after the work on the new building has been completed.

A new car park will also be constructed close to the hospital and there are plans to create green space.

Tony Bell, Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Today’s decision brings our vision of transforming the Royal a step closer to reality.”
