Twenty years needed to make Scottish schools fit for purpose

A report into schools across Scotland has revealed that a third are in poor condition and it will take 20 years to make the improvements needed to make them fit for purpose.

The government has spent £3.9 billion renovating and rebuilding schools in Scotland since 2000, but the investigation by Audit Scotland found that even some schools that have been refurbished recently are experiencing problems with ventilation and heating.

219 schools have been built in Scotland in the last 10 years, but John Baillie, Chair of the Accounts Commission who co-published the report called for councils to work harder in their management of the schools.

The report titled “Improving the School Estate” also stated that environmental concerns, such as sustainability, were only recently starting to be considered.

He said: “Councils could also do more to share good practice and improve designs, and make environmental sustainability a key consideration.”
