Construction industry has benefited from migrant workforce
The skills shortage in the UK construction industry has been relieved by the large number of migrant workers entering the country in the last few years.
John Slaughter, the director for external affairs at the Home Builders Federation said that there had been a “largely positive” effect on the building sector by the arrival of the foreign workers.
He also noted that there were still many opportunities for indigenous workers.
“We have had quite a lot of workers who perhaps initially came in to help with the skills shortage so it’s been beneficial in terms of effective operation in the industry.”
Mr Slaughter made point that migrant workers are providing a short-term solution to the skills shortage as it takes a number of years for workers to get qualified.
